After the construction of cisternes, the Foundation “Water for Life” was asked by the island administration to move our attention to building primary schools. Many children had to walk far due the lack of a school in their villages. Aim of the school construction was that a child doesn’t have to walk more than 5 km to go to school.
In total, there are 12 primary schools built in the island and 3 schools were expanded with rooms, canteens and toilets. The first school was built in Campanas Alta area. In Monte Largo, the school was opened in 1995 by the President of Cape Verde. Due to the eruption of the Pico volcano in early April 1995, the population of Chã das Caldeiras had to evacuate at the foot of the volcano to the village of Achada Furna. With the support of “Foundation Wild Geese”, we were able to start the construction of the school in Achada Furna at the end of 1995.
After the construction of a school with two classrooms and a canteen in Cobom, a suburb of the capital San Filipe, there was ample ground to construct also a big football field. The last primary school was built in Velho Manuel and transferred to the Ministry of Education in July 2004, after five years this school was extended with a third classroom.
The overall result of the various school projects ensured that children could attend schools within walking distance of their own village.
